Looking to extend the holiday magic just a little longer this year? Take a trip across the Harlem River to our sister borough of the Bronx.

Last week my extended family and I visited the New York Botanical Garden for the Holiday Train Show and had a great time. Admittedly I know nothing about model trains, but the NYBG show was fun anyway. All throughout the Haupt Conservatoy trains wound their way around famous and historical New York buildings. The buildings are recreated using natural materials collected from the gardens. Seeing The New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Penn Station built only from twigs, leaves, seeds and other plant matter was pretty impressive. A few uptown gems were in the mix as well. The Apollo Theater represented Harlem, Morningside Heights had Grant’s Tomb, and East Harlem had a replica of the Aguilar Library, while Washington Heights had several landmarks - The Morris-Jumel Mansion, The Little Red Lighthouse and the George Washington Bridge.

If you’re running out of ways to entertain your kids over the holiday break this is a great day activity for them. If you want to do something less family-friendly, more adults only, look into attending one of the Bar Car Nights which feature free cocktails, jazz, ice carving demonstrations and fire dancing as well as a chance to roam through the gardens at night.

The Holiday Train Show is certainly fun, but the Botanical Garden is a great place to visit year round. My personal favorite is visiting the annual Orchid show, which runs from February to April and provides a few hours of much needed tropical respite from winter. Maybe I’ll see you there!
