I hate running. In high school running the mile was torture and really I was no good at it. I could play four quarters of basketball like it was nothing. But just running to run, I didn’t see the point. Living Uptown in New York, I am slowly changing my mind. I see now that running is a mental endeavor.
Last year, I completed the Percy Sutton 5k. I was nervous going in because it was the furthest distance I have ever attempted to run. During the event, I was honestly pleasantly surprised. It felt amazing running with a pack of people thru the streets of Harlem. The community actually got up early and stood outside of their homes to cheer on complete strangers. I felt like part of the community and there were thousands of people! It was just a great atmosphere to be a part of.
This year, I’ve decided to run 5 races because I like collecting shirts and numbers. My first race of the year is the Washington Heights 5k and I am very much looking forward to it. If you want to run with the community without waiting for the next race, please check out Harlem Run. Alison Desir is the founder and she is pretty great! They run on Monday and Thursday nights. It is free. Just show up. They also have t-shirts!
