Four years ago I knew that I was going to make New York my home. Having only visited as a tourist on many occasions I asked trusted friends and colleagues their advice as to where I should look to settle.
"Harlem", was the unanimous cry.
"Why?", I replied.
"More for your buck."
The second apartment I saw was a 2 bedroom, floor through, washer/dryer in unit, private balcony in an historic Brownstone with views directly onto Marcus Garvey Park, $400 under my budget. WOW!!!
The transport links are incredible with the 2/3 express trains, the 4,5,6 and Metro North all 5 mins walk in different directions.
In the last year, two french restaurants have opened on Lenox Ave, Cherie and Barawine adding to the impressive collection of epicurean delights which include Red Rooster, Sylvias and Settepani.
In the summer, the park is host to numerous free music, theatrical and film events presented on its fabulous Richard Rogers Amphitheater stage including the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. I love hearing the enticing tunes calling everyone into the park to share in the celebration that is Harlem.
With Wholefoods, Banana Republic Factory Store and Bed, Bath & Beyond all on 125th Street I couldn't be happier.
I am truly blessed to be able to live and work (my commute to the Bohemia office is a 12 minute walk) in such a thriving, eclectic and warmly welcoming environment and to genuinely promote 'my hood'.
